Automatic Water Feeder Question/Problems

is to add a lot of fresh water. Read that in Dans's books and picked that up on the wall in the past fews years that Ive popped in and out here.

Ok, heres my question. My next door neighbor got a new boiler installed this summer w/auto feeder. Now I knew the past 2 owners of that home and they both told me that EVERY MORNING they had to add water to thier boiler.

I figure they have a leak in their return somewhere. Dont know how they miss it unless its going right into the ground. This has been going on for YEARS....

Now there is a very good chance that leak is still there, unless it was in the return right at the boiler and fixed with new install, so Im figuring this boiler is going to be getting fresh feed water every day for the entire heating system.. day in day out year after year.

I believe its a Weil Mclain gas steamer..

How long do you guys give this thing before the fresh water eats a hole right thru it???

    boiler leak

It could be that the boiler itself was leaking and the problem got solved when the boiler was changed. The new owner can check it out by shutting off the feeder and see if the boiler goes off on low water (make sure the LWCO works, first). If it loses water overnight, there's a leak somewhere or some very bad vents are letting out a lot of steam.
It can take a long time to rot out a good boiler, but it can happaen quickly, too...not way to tell for sure, but the possibel leak senario is worht looking into.

    Put a VTX auto feeder

on the system, it has a digital read out and will tell you how much water the boiler is using in gallons, It also comes with a tag to give you an Idea of how many gallons a particular size boiler should use, a very god is=dea and indicator of a leak
