the type of distribution, or emitters. A properly sized boiler connected to a hot water baseboard, (low mass) for instance, would not be at risk as much as that boiler connected to a large radiant slab. A cold concrete slab can easily overpower a boiler with all that cold thermal mass. Especially when started in winter at or near freezing temperatures! It is quite possible that boiler, without return protection, could stay in a condensing mode for hours, even days!

The cost and measures, as you mentioned, to watch and protect a boiler from cold return temperatures are not all that expensive or complicated. Why not install a proper protection?

Again, we all have to factor the "risk" and potential problems when deciding if a simple ball valve bypass, a by pass pump, or thermostatic protection is best for the particular application.

There really isn't much of an efficiency loss when part of the flow is diverted back to the boiler. The boiler output to the system doesn't change,it is just blended.

    System bypass loop inefficient?

    Is a bypass [routing supply water right back into the return manifold] inefficient?? . In the usual underradiated basement a warm boiler lends some heat to the workshop. And with a vent damper and an insulated jacket on the boiler, doesn't most of the heat merely stay available for the soon to follow next cycle??. And it is gauranteed no-fail boiler protection: no sensor, no thermic valve. Just warm water to the boiler inlet.

    Last year I had a Buderus seller from out west tell me he just trusts the Buderus iron and the Logamatic controller, and never uses a bypass loop.. But, I do not yet have a Logamatic. [And our inspector wants to see a bypass anyway]. Comment?

    system by pass

    i install mostly oil fired unit and alot with tankless coil i always install a system by pass which is tee in after my pump back into the return i've found that on large water content systems helps prevent boiler condensation and also help pervent low limit circ. cycling i also always install flow chk valves before my by pass and even on my boiler with a tankless i use a low limit aquastat simple because all of the older boiler i've seen still working all had one thing in common low limit aquastat on oil it's a no brainer i've also seen it on some older gas units that where still in service after80n years amazing as for the by pass if your zone valves are on the spply your gonna need it and as for buderus there boilers are top rated i use them on my own jobs i can't convert the bosses but when i'm the boss it's all that i recemend for the money they are one of the best units i've installed and serviced i even installed one for my parents as a present good luck
