Boiler piping is perfect, but you should ramm that black magic marker down his throat. Sell him a $4000. car and write on the hood the date you sold it to him.

    Both look OK

to me too. But Kevin is right about the insulation. And do those steam mains have vents at the ends?

    2 vents on each main

or one on each of 4 mains? To make sure they're right- how long is each steam main, and what pipe diameter? What vents are on each main now?

1 on each of 4 mains. They are vent rite # 35. The longest main is no more than 15 ft'. All of the mains are 2".

whoever piped out these boilers is one damn good steamfitter.
  • I gotta agree with you

He's done that before. I wish everybody's boiler were piped like that.

    Those vents might do OK

on such short pipes. They are about the same size as a Hoffman #4A, which will vent about 0.4 cubic feet of air at 2 ounces pressure. That 15-foot pipe contains 0.345 cubic feet. If all mains fill with steam in about a minute (measured from the time the boiler starts making steam) you should be OK.

    Steam trouble

I can not get my radiators to heat, I have replaced the traps. I know that I have an air problem, but I do not know where to install air vents. The trouble is on one side of the building, and I get air out of the steam side of the radiators when I open the union.

There should be a vent on the dry return

which is the return that runs overhead. If this vent goes bad, all the radiators feeding into that dry return will be cold.
