Main vent

There is no main vent in my friend's house (one pipe steam system).There is no room to make an opening before the elbow and install the main vent. I've seen one where they installed the vent about 6 inches below the elbow of the main pipe, is that ok?

That should work

but keep it as close to the elbow as you can so water rising in the "A" dimension won't flood the vent.
