from Wirsbo, for visiting my Hydronics class Tuesday night and giving 3 hours of his time talking about plastic tubing and radiant floors. All of the students also got a design book for radiant floors. At the end of class Wes was still going strong and the students even stayed a little longer than quitting time. (but not much) Wirsbo is a classy outfit and they go the extra mile to take care of their customers.

    Wirsbo Tubing

I have an open radiant heating system. I am looking for some where to buy the Wirsbo tubing. My system requirements are 55 Psi and 140 degrees f max. I would like to use a minimal of 5/8 tubing up to 7/8 if possible. The system is designed with only one run of tubing through each joist so a high flow rate is important to ensure system performance up here in the north east. 1600 foot with 4-400 foot loops.

    Thanks.
    Steve C.

    What?

What is the system pressure doing at 55 PSI? I've not encountered a situation that would call for this. Just curious.

If you mean by "open system" that you are passing your DHW through the tubing...PLEASE really think about this. Yeah, it is cheaper, but there are potential consequences...

I'm a DIYer all the way, I laid my own tubing and did my own design, my house is GREAT, couldn't be happier, so I am all for that. But please be careful with the open idea...

    Open systems

Open combination systems are an excellent breeding ground for legionella bacteria.I would strongly reccomend you do some research on the topic BEFORE you install such a system.

I've been involved with the Radiant Panel Association on this very subject and what I've learned in my research has scared me.In my opinion it's not worth putting someones health at risk to save a few dollars.

If it's a water heater you plan to use, make it a closed system and put the heating side on a heat exchanger.

I would also reconsider using such large tubing with only one pass per bay.Running tubing in this fasion is like trying to lace your shoes with only one end of the lace.

    Just some words of advice...

  • Burnhams Pex is rated for 180 degrees at 100psi , I don't

know of such and application, but I'm sure Wirsbo is rated the same. I would install a seperate water tank for this application, the're only about $200 dollars. This would be a lot better than getting sick.

    7/8\" tubing? in a j-bay?????

After having wrestled more than a few miles of tube through joist bays, I can say without a doubt that.....

    A. Whoever told you to do this has never done it themselves

    B. They have utterly no concern for your health and well-being

    C. They don't care if your system works or not

    D. You need to get some help and advice from someone else
