Oil Burner Problem

Member Posts: 63
Have a Dunkirk boiler with a beckett burner. There is a noise coming from the burner that can be heard on two levels of the house. When the burner is running it is louder than normal. It seems to be coming from the combustion chamber. There is no liner in the firebox, only a blanket on the back wall. THe boiler is only 3-4years old, and the homeowner claims this has been a problem from the beginning. Acording to the Dunkirk and Beckett all the components and settings are correct. I've never came across a problem like this. Any suggestions?
I once heard that if you replace a solid nozzle with a hollow that it would quiet it down, but never had to try it.

burner noise
If this is indeed something that has been going on a while and you have a noisey fire, you can use a hollow nozzle to quiet it down some. These boilers with small, short boxes can be very noisy. Don't get me wrong, I've been a Beckett guy for years, but I found the Carlin to be a lot quieter in a lot of applications. Try a Delevan hollow, it may do the trick.

Thanks for the input. Its weird that I have never come across this, nor have I heard of it before over 20years working on systems.
I also prefer beckett, maybe it just cause there so many out there, and I've become very comfortable. Although Dunkirk suggested to consider replacing the burner with a Riello.0 -
dunkirk
i recently came across a dunkirk boiler a plumber had installed and never called to have any one set up the burner the boiler was quite dirty and tyhe nozzle was only hand tight and also oversized for the boiler at 1.50 gph at100 psi the burner was set a 140 psi this happens with all the new burners that come with boiler i see i left the pump pressure as i9 should be and down sized the nozzle to a 1.00 gph and adjusted the air and see ran excellent what spray angle was on the burner and where the electrodes adjust for the correct noz angle i've as of late seen becketts with a 45 noz on a 3 section mc lean and to my surprise it was not to long of a flame with a few adjustments it ran like a after burner white heat small trace of smoke and the flame far enough from the target wall that i wasimpressed hope i was of some help peaceR.A. This boiler has a 1.0gph / 70 degree / B Delevan nozzle and the pump pressure is at 150psi. The input of the boiler is 210,000. This set up was approved by Dunkirk.
Also the flame is real close to the target wall.0 -
beckett
does the beckett gun you are using have a turbolator mounted to the nozzle assemble or just a f head at the end of the blast tube if it has the turbolator mounted to the gun you should most likly use a 60 or 45 degreenoz is there any carbon build up at the head assemble also what is the max firing rate for the boiler alot of times the boiler comp. send the burners out with the max firing noz already in the gun it can cause alot of promblems after a year when you go to clean it and it,s packed how is your draft across the box and at the brech also take a look at a pressure equivelent chart for pump pressure effect on naz sizing alot of guys forget that and alot of times threy are over firing the unit the manafactors i believe always cover there a's and say any thing to get off if the flame is blasting the target wall that ain't right and if it is is dunkrik going to make good on a chamber kit re check your pump pressure off the pump not from thr jet line and see if you have varirations in pressure try adjusting the secondary air adjustment good luck and never believe sales men they back the products until there's promblem then they don't have the answers good luck and don't give upR.A. Oil Burners
I don't want to sound condensending - but no matter what the manufacturer recommends you are the final judge of what setup is right. They are dealing with ideal enviroments you are in the real world.
Is it just moving from an older 1725rpm burner to a high speed flame retention head burner causing the customer to complain?
Have you check the draft? Air adjustment can also cause the burner to roar so you need to put your test equipment on to see what the flame is doing -to much air because of high draft or air setting to large will increase noise.
Going to a hollow or what I've found better is a semi-solid nozzle usually does quiet the combustion noise down. Delevan B's are among the noisiest because they concentrate the oil so solidly in the center you get a "hard" flame.
Lastly you can build a muffler to help quiet the flame but I've never had to do this with a Beckett - a Riello a number of times. his is more for noise in the flue.
What you might want to try if the first suggestions don't work is setting up the burner with a fresh air kit. I recommend this on any new install. Not only will it quiet the burner (rushing air noise) it will provide a more stable enviroment for the combustion hence better, cleaner, and quieter runs.
Enough ranting get us the numbers from your testing and we should be able to quiet this down.
