Those of you that have installed the Weil-McLain Ultra, How have you found them to be? Any problems to watch out for during the install or set-up? Any servicing problems that you might share with me? I sold my first Ultra today and would like to know if there are any quirks to watch out for with this product.

  • Ultra

I attended a seminar on the Ultra a while ago. The instructor did state the hooking up the electrical could get tricky because it is on the backside of the unit.

    ULTRA

Just make sure the installers know what they are doing. Mine has been done twice and still isnt right. STUDY PAGE 15 of the manual. I just got my gas reading for November and it is half of what it was last year. This year is a little milder but thats 2 months in a row, I hope it stays that way.

As a home owner I am very happy with the boiler itself, the ease of checking all the settings and changeing them, the outdoor sensor and how quiet it runs. Install was a big headach, however this is avoidable

Funny you should mention the Ultra...

I just fired up my second one today.

Be sure to follow the book in how you pipe it. Primary secondary is a must. On the piping that they show to the indirect, they show only one flocheck. On the two that I have installed, I noticed some ghost flow thru the indirect when the heating zones are running. I will probably add a second flocheck on the indirect.Be sure to size the indirect circ to handle the boiler's flow rate, as the system circ shuts down when the idirect calls.

It was pretty cool listening to the thing modulate up and down as zones were calling and being satisfied.

Try to wire it BEFORE you put your vent piping on it, otherwise you have to stand on your head to do it!

They should redesign it so that the vent is in the rear, and the wiring terminals, and supply and return "tappings" are more towards the front.

The bottom line is to sit down and read the book!

Good luck, it's a fine product!

    Ultra Setup

I had my Ultra installed yesterday. I went over the controls again myself tonight and noted the Space Heating Setup appeared incorrect. In the Parameter Mode, the third step for the Space Heating Setup should read "Left digit shows 3, right digit shows 1". Mine was set at 3 and not 1. Does anyone know what the difference between the 3 setting and the 1 setting? F Reynolds

    Wiring

I fired my first one Wed. It's sweet so far have to do some clean up today on wiring, controls, & condensate drain. Andy you sure are right about the wiring, was not a happy camper, bad thing I thought about doing it before the venting. Any pictures, anyone?

Not only that, but although I do not have DHW hooked up to it, the setting are set for DHW when I suspect I should set them to off. I've noticed after changing the "3" to a "1" that from the start to finish mode on space heating, the first digit goes from "1, pre-purge" to "3, space heating" to "7, pump run" then back to standby. I don't think I noticed it go through that cycle before. I feel like the first person on the block to get a TV set. F Reynolds

  • We have 3 Ultra's installed so far. Working on the 4th. They have been fine so far. Quite a bit to installing one. Have a couple pics here.
  • Wiring the Ultra

It is a good idea to install some wiring before installing and use a seperate terminal board mounted externally from the unit. It makes for easier troubleshooting also. I think they should actually move the wiring.

    Space Heating

Have you notice what the factory setting was for the space heating function in the Parameter Mode? Was it factory set for "3" (circulator constantly running) or "1" (circulator controlled by boiler)?

Also, if you do not have DHW, do you turn that function to "off" or just leave it the way it is?

    Para Mode

F Reynolds, mine was set to 1 on space heating and left there, DHW is going to be installed next season, DHW is left 1 position.

Like the unit. First installed in my home in New Mexico (5000 ft)April 2003. Had to change control module due to erratic firing but the distributor in Albuquerque (SOCHA) is great and got it done asap.
    LP unit conversion, easily done.
Install easy. Question why 1 1/4" pipe diagrammed when in/out is 1 ".
Wiring is a problem due to behind the vent/air intake pipes. Send an engineer to install two or ten and that will change.

Operation is fine but setting parameter mode #4 to 120 does not result in outlet water temp (info mode #1) as high as it should be. Also, Info mode #6, target temp does not agree with the correct curve temp and does not agree with the actual outlet temp when firing stops (#6 is about ten degrees lower). Spoke to SOCHA, the distributor and this will be resolved with Weil-McLain.

2100 sf heated, did not use primary/secondary, utilized Taco O11 pump supplied with boiler for radiant with differential bypass. Pump is less flanges so you need to get a set for install.
