Alaskan Lawnmower

I was even told not to play with her in front of kids by my neighbor, so the kids wouldn't get any ideas.

We got to know each other pretty well. She wasn't your ordinary moose, and we had plenty of ordinary ones on my tree farm.

I put a hat on her one day, and my brother took a picture. My wife would only pet her from inside the house through a window. She'd come right up and stick her head in the window to be petted. She was a Unit!

My inlaws came up for Christmas that year. I walked a mile into the woods, found her by the swamp, scratched her ear, and she followed me to the house. All the family got to visit her.

High point of my life, so far.

That is a 1000lb wild animal, you are lucky no one got hurt approaching that closely. Much wiser and safer{for the animal as well} to admire from afar

    Hi Abbey

I had one yearling (no mother with it) that hung around our house for several days. Probably 15 years ago. Got to pet that one (I know also your not sposed too, but it was so cute and friendly) Kind of like a horse with a bad hair day. We have had up to 5 moose in our yard at one time over the years. Living in Alaska the last 26 years, we just kinda get used to moose in the yard, even though we live in Anchorage (280,000 people). Sometimes you gotta slow down in the car cause one is ambling slowly across the road (major streets in the middle of busy downtown traffic.)

Last year I went on a remote fishing trip and one day we flew over to the coast and walked around in a field with about 15 grizzly bear grazing in the grass. Turns out this is the place where Timothy Treadwell and his girl freind were killed a couple of months ago. The Lodge owner got a call from Timothy that nite that we got back to say he had just gotten there for the summer. Also had a red fox following us around while we were in the field and would actually come up and sniff your hand. Didn't have my digital camera with me so no good pics. We did get pretty close to a couple of the bears though and they pretty much ignored us.

The best bear gun is a 22 pistol. You don't have to kill or outrun the bear, you just have to outrun someone your with (point gun at other persons foot, shoot, run like hell)

Have a great day, comfy 7 degrees here, gotta go home and change into shorts.

  • We had a bear that came up to the house

A big she-male, bout 4 or 5 hundred pound black bear, came to the house because we had honeybee hives.

2 nights in a row she ripped up the hives. The third night, at sunset, when she showed up, 8 or so of us lined up at the hives to discourage her. 3 adults and the rest kids. After sunset, we could move the hives.

Uncle Daymon asked me if I thought I could out run the bear.

I recited Dan's story, and told him, "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!"

You never saw education sink into little kids like it did that minute!!! Uncle Daymon and I were all alone with the bear all of a sudden. How I laughed!

Both my kids had to walk to school, about a mile. Both have encounterd moose, one a bear, on the way to school.

How would you rather raise kids?

    Guess

there's a few of us on this forum from Alaska.
My photo was taken from a safe distance. I've seen what those hooves can do to a wolf.

You're right, we did have too much time on our hands.
