Banging in riser

We have recently installed a new steam boiler with a boiler feed unit (hoffman VBF) The 1-1/4" conensate return from the system is a wet return low on grade with pitch in mechanical room to boiler feed pump. There is approx an 18" riser coming up off the return to enter into the inlet of tank.It appears that the hot condensate wants to flash in that riser shortly after the system is running and condensate returns. Does the riser have to be eliminated and the tank lowered so condensate returns into the tank on gravity with no riser or can some type of trap? be installed prior to entering the tank. I suspect that there may be some bad steam traps in the building causing the condensate to return hot enough to flash in that section of pipe. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

    Two questions

First, did this system have a pumped return before? If not, you may have a steam main dripping into the return to the tank without a trap. Each such drip must have a trap. Using one big trap at the tank inlet won't work.

Second, if you replaced an older pump and had to elbow the return up to enter the tank, the air trying to vent thru that water seal may be causing the noise. The cure for this is to install a main vent after each trap above the waterline in the return.

    Hope this helps.
