How to lay up a summer house for the winter.

I have a summer house in Connecticut that uses a hot water loop heating system. I like to keep the house at 50 degrees in the winter when we are not there ( Nov to May ).
In case of heating system failure, I would like to shut off the water service to minize frezee damage. Can I fill the heating loop with a propylene glycol- water mixture and then shut off the water service to the house and keep the thermostat at 50 degrees. Are there any other chages i would have to make to the system? Are there any problems in doing this? Has anyone done this and what were the results?

When you shut off the water service, it will still have water in it. I suggest having the water lines blown out or otherwise protected. The traps in your sinks and fixtures will need protecting, too. Dishwasher pumps and washing machine pumps hold water, too.
If that boiler has a coil, the coil can freeze and break. That would be the most serious concern with the boiler itself. If that were protected, the boiler will be OK through the winter.

We also close down our cottage for the winter but visit
frequently so we installed a control to turn heat on but more important it calls me if the power goes off or the temp drops to a set temp.
To close up we always drain the water heater and sponge out
the toilet tanks leave all faucets open and use rv antifreeze in all the traps and toilet bowls and also pour
in some to the dishwasher and run it. the water softener
is drained and the control head is removed and put into
the refrigerator which we leave on with anything that
might freeze between visits.
hope it helps

You can shut off, and drain the water system shile leaving the boiler full and running. Isolate it from the system and make sure it's equipped with a low water cutoff. Use one with an alarm circuit and a call out temp alarm is a great idea!!
