Polaris heating & DHW tank track record

I was wondering how many of you Wallies have had experience with these things? What should I be looking out for? I think they were made by the American Water Heater Company™. Not sure who sells them around here but, the installing contractor is long gone.

They also said that their Wirsbo telestats are "sticking intermitently." I've never had to trouble with Wirsbo telestats failing. Any ideas?

How come I don't see more of these Polaris™ combo-tanks around here ( East coast) used for radiant?

I've worked on a few, hope your good with electrical testers. All the controls are under the tank so you'll be spending time on your belly. They have had a problem with the blower motor, there is a part, I don't remember what, but it comes loose and jams the blower assymbly. The hot surface ignitor has been troublesome but I believe its readily available from Robert Shaw. They have also had problems with the burner screen burning thru. American water heater actually is pretty helpful but parts are usually a day or two to get. Most of the one's I've serviced I've also replaced because no one wants to work on them.

Quite a few of them around here; great concept and a wonderful space-saver.

Their tech. support number is: (800)999-5210 and stay open late for all the west coast contractors.

Try to get their troubleshooting flowchart; it makes it easy to diagnose problems. Most common ailment is a burned out igniter; tries to light 3 times and then shuts down. If you have a clamping ammeter, put it around one of the igniter wires; you should get 3 amps when it's heating up; if zero, there's a bad igniter. You have to be a contortionist to change it out.

Other less common problems are a bad ECO or stat board.

    Polaris tanks

Don't see many here ( Maine) because they're illegal!!!! A lot of codes require separating DHW from heating water. I had one in my customer base ( installed by others) that's had a lot of ignitor problems. I no longer service it because I don't want the liability.

I thought the Polaris™ was similar to a Bradford White Combicore™ having 2 seperated mediums. Turns out It's one big efficient hot water heater.

Sounds like she needs a flatplate HX.
