pH/Water

I was in my local plumbing supply house looking for Hydrion papaer or something to test the pH of the water in a recently installed steam boiler (as the manufacturerer recommends) and a local contractor who's "been in the business for 35 years" said he never bothers to test for pH becuase in a steam system it is normal to be adding fresh water all the time (even daily) so what is the point for testing for pH when you are constantly adding city water anyway. I was always under the impression that a good tight steam system making dry steam with no leaks and properly functioning vents would hardly ever require make-up water. But I haven't "been in the business for 35 years" (yet) so what am I missing here? I would appreciate feedback/advice/comments from the steam experts. Thanks.

check the ph...if it gets too high ...you'll end up with foam
  • yup, and

if it gets too low, you'll end up with holes.

Thanks for the good advice. I will continue to test the pH.
