Anyone have experience with a specific brand of infra-red radiant heater? Have a client looking to install one in a 17x24 garage. Thanks in advance, Adam

I installed a infra- red heater in my garage and I hate It! I think the company is Enerco. You have to remember that it is radiant heat so it heats the objects in the room, so you have to leave it on. I find this a down fall because I only want theat when I'm out there working. It takes 5 hours to warm up on a 20F day. Second downfall it has a open flame, yes its at the ceiling but still an open flame in a garage. I would put in a sealed combustion through the wall heater or something to that effect.

    I'm sitting at my desk

    looking at one right now.

It's a 60,000 BTU model in our warehouse. So far just had a few cold mornings to test it. It was on for 30 minutes while we had the door open, didn't take long after the door closed that I could turn it off. In bitter weather, will have to leave it set on low & cycling.

Yes, they do heat objects and do have to be left on in very cold weather if you want it to heat the slab and provide some radiant up at you. Seems to be what most warehouses & repair shops around here are going to as they promise some healthy energy savings over fan forced unit heaters.

    infra-red heaters

Open grid infra-red heaters must have adequate clearances above and below the units. To get one large enough to heat the space you described would be a real problem with clearances, unless the ceiling is 12-14' high. I favor the Reznor brand of infra-red grid heaters because they can be installed in a horizontal position without frying the controls! We have 3- 100,000btuh units in our warehouse (3600sqft) and they bring that area from a 30° cold start to shirt sleeve 65° in less than 20 minutes. In a residential garage, I'd go with a conventional fan driven unit heater if I couldn't have radiant in the floor. Clearances are critical with infra-reds!!

    Hot Dog

The favorite garage add on heater here in my area of Wisconsin is the wall hung direct vent "hot dog" from modine. Johnstone Supply sells them in this area
