but the truth sometimes hurts.
Tony, I did not install it myself. When I decided on the Ultra I looked for someone who had done it before but I couldnt find one. I could only find 1 place that even sold them sold them and they could not recomend anyone to put it in. I had several people come to the house and give estamates but no one had experence with these boilers. I wish I found this sight before I had it installed. The guy I chose was the low bidder but he had the most experence and I know 2 people that used him with no problems. Anyway whats done is done. How bad is it? does it totaly have to be ripped out or can it be fixed? Can I get throught the winter like this or not? How much do you think it will cost to fix?
Thanks again to all for your time in helping me
I can't blame anyone but myself for buying the 240 instead of the 155. My old boiler was 270. and the supplier told me to take 1' of baseboard and multiply it by 550 then add 40,000 for the DHW this all came to 210 so I went with the 240

Ultra boiler photos
Many of you that helped me with my new Ultra boiler were asking for photos. Well here you go. Sorry it took so long. How does the piping config. look? any Problems?
Thanks0 -
Circulator orientation
I believe that the circulator should always be installed with the shaft horizontally - the bearings may fail or air build-up can occur otherwise. Some of yours look like the shaft is vertical or at some angle to the floor.
I was curious what switching relays you used, and the general wiring scheme to the Ultra control from the space heating circulators?0 -
Better look at the circulators
Does this help? The wiring pannel is a taco 6 zone with priority for DHW. The DHW is wired directly to the boiler so zone 6 is open on the pannel and the priority is turned off. The boiler automatically makes DHW a priority.
The zones were canted slightly to fit them in place.0 -
Taco sez
The destructions for a 007 say you can mount the motor up if the system is above 20 psi. Otherwise, horizonal only.0 -

should I
change them or wait and see?0 -
Circulators
Lead Pipe,
On the next job try the taco circs. with the flo-check built in to the circ. itself. The number would be the same but with the IFC added [taco 007-IFC].It saves laber and the added cost is less than a seperate circ. and flocheck combined.
Thanx, Gary from Granville0 -
System pressure
Do you know for sure that your system pressure at the circulator locations will always be above 20 psi, especially at low temperatures? Do you have room to swing them to the horizontal position? Why tempt possible failure on a job you obviously put care into?0 -
Its not my work
I hired someone to do it for me and had some problems and came here for help, see ultra boiler thread. Some pros asked to see pictures in order to help me. I may be able to turn the circs. a couple of inches but thats it. everything seems to be working fine now. What should I do?0 -
Floyd
Floyd where are you?0 -
I'm here......
still fuming about what I see in those pics.!!!!!!
I see so much I don't like that I have refrained from saying anything.... my Dad always says that if you can't say nothing nice than don't say anything at all......
Where do I start.....
I guess the mish mash of pipes and no rymne or reason as to how they are run......
then there's the lack of support....for the pipes and we all know how important good support is when carrying heavy loads:-)
Wires run all over the place...and generally absolutely NO organization whatsoever.......
A 230 in situation where a 155 would have EASILY provided for your needs and more..... that sucker will short cycle....even with the turn down....
AND for cryin' in a bucket fix those pumps... says not to do that right in the destructions.... which obviously were NOT read.....of course NONE of the instructions were read.....
Hope this was LOW bidder because that's the quality work you got.......
sorry for the rant.....you asked for it.....
It's such a shame to see great equipment installed in such a crude fashion.

Floyd, no really what do you think ?
I took your dad's advice lol John@Reliable0 -
Nightmare \"Ultraboiler photos\"
I first awoke to see these photos at 4:30am. I thought I was having a nightmare. You really need someone with the expertise to evaluate your entire system. That would take some real hands on involvement. If you don't know for sure, why take the chance. Just because it gives heat, doesn't mean it's okay. It's not to late to learn from your mistake. The kind and knowlegeable professionals on the wall, can only help so much with the written word. Good Luck! Ken (KWH) P.S. The equipment you're using, is (STATE OF THE ART)don't waste it...0 -
mish mash
I like that description
Is that supposed to be reverse return, or P/S ? Right now it's neither. Closely spaced tees are NOT for closely spaced circulators. Reverse return's no good for the Ultra besides.
You should've bought the boiler from a heating contractor who understands it and let HIM put it in. As I recall, you bought it yourself and hired out the labor. Obviously to the low bidder, or a buddy who can solder. You need to bite the bullet and hire a professional.
Even though I've made a fair amount of jingle correcting messes like yours, it still irritates me to see one.
Now really, did you install this yourself ? There's no shame in admitting that. The shame would be to do it this way and charge for it.
Like Floyd said, "you asked for it".
Education can be very expensive.

Once again
someone gets "bitten" by a sales oriented wholesaler. They should not have sold it to you or anyone else who doesn't understand it's MO and proper application(s). Let alone inability to understand and follow instructions provided.
What part of the country are you in ? There must be someone nearby.0 -
Trumbull Connecticut
Tony, Can I get through the season? I got 3 little ones and do not want to shut everything down for days, again!0 -
well...
It shouldn't take more than one long day to straighten things out.(for 2 guys) It may last the winter, you may lose a circ along the way.
The analogy I'll use is this : Your car will run a qt of oil short for a while and seem ok. Problem is damage and excessive wear occur that you can't see right away, and it'll never be able to be undone. The lifetime will be shortened.
Too bad you're not about 400 miles West. I find it hard to believe there's no one in CT able to handle it.0 -
2 guys one long day
so it is a total gut job then. Can any of the parts be saved or do I have to buy all new stuff. it was about $1200 in plumbing parts.0 -
most of it
can be used. Just need some fittings, nipples, copper and THE RIGHT 2 GUYS.0 -
My zip is 06611
if I go to find a contractor near you on this site it gives me a list. Do you know any of them from here?0 -
Hey,
Tony has given you some great advice already.
I agree, you will be okay for awhile, but should have things fixed up......can't put a figure on how long things will last like that, but you probably haven't hurt things too bad at this point and with alittte time and some fittings, vast improvments could be made... would want have to take a look at things in person to tell exactly how bad things really are, it's hard to tell some of the details for sure just from the pictures.
I have met JR at Wetstock 1 and I now that he is a very knowledgable person, I don't know if he would want to tackle a "fix up".....he's only 13 mi. from you.
Good luck and take care,
Floyd
PS In most cases you DO NOT need to add btu for an indirect AND never just figure the sizing of a boiler by a "rule of thumb" like 550 btu per foot.....who says that you need all the baseboard that you have in the first place?????
Have an accurate "heat loss" done and size by that.0 -
can I get a list
of things that you see are wrong, or need to be done
1.xxxxxxxxxxx
2.xxxxxxxxxxx
this whay when a guy comes to the house I can have a clue if he knows what he is doing. Also I want to confront the guy who did this and see if I can get my $ back. The size of the boiler 240 i'm pritty much stuck with how bad is this going to be? what are the problems with having the 240?
thank you0 -

O.K. lets take a deep breath
O.K. so its not pretty. O.K. the pumps need to be turned.
Its piped the way the manuel says. I don't think the whole systems needs to be scraped, nor does this guy need to be really worried.

i returned
your e-mail but it came back.
I've reviewed the manual, and it shows a header similar to yours. My conversations w/ W-M about P/S for a job w/ an Ultra had me thinking in that direction. Sorry.
Turn the supply header (w/ the circs) so the tee branches point up toward the ceiling. The flo-controls will need to be re-piped so the weight will drop when off. That will get your shafts horizontal.
I personally would pipe a "circular" header w/ 0011 of boiler providing flow thru it and zone circs w/ close tees.0 -
so
do you agree with smile its not as bad as you first thought? how much would it cost to make the repairs, about? I know what you meen when you say the circs need to be turned but the other stuff is over my head.
How does the vent piping look? I forgot to mention that I did that part.0 -
prices
are a local variable and not discussed on The Wall.
Vent exhaust should be pitched up to outside. I can't tell from a picture if it is. If it wasn't, you'd probably hear gurgling when running, or major dripping outside. Not a good place for an icicle.0 -
Sorry
I didn't know about the price thing. How about this how long do you think it would take to do the repairs?0
