I am looking at a home that is a Ranch style with 1200 sq ft living area. It has elec baseboard heat. Elec is very expensive. Would it be a good idea to convert to oil or gas heat?

    Are we talking ....

LP/propane or Natural gas? Natral is competitive w/ Oil but LP is not(at least around here-NH.)The other Question is do you have a Chimney? That would give you more choices...Where are you?

    Good idea?

Absolutely. That's an answer to question #1. How much? No matter what the cost, it will recoup your initial investment a couple of times over in the 15 year lifespan of the new system. That being said, $15 per square foot or more depending on the equipment selected is not out of the question. How much comfort do you want?

One Rinnai 1004 Gas Direct vent wall furnace

will heat 1200 sq ft with reasonable insulation. Have done about 30,000 electric conversion jobs with them in the past 10 yrs, primarily in ME, NH, and VT. Best product in the catagory, simple cost effective installation, VERY GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT. I've sold about 75,000 of them and they are just flat excellent. While the 1004 will heat that space I prefer the smaller units. The 556 WTA and a 431 at oppostie end of the building would be my best solution for this install. If you have not tried these, check them out. They are very high quality and they will consistently exceed your expectations!!!
