WINDOWS & INSULATION

I have old casement windows, they are one pane, I have installed weatherstripping to the inside jam of windows. I need to caulk around the outside of windows, what is the best way to do this and what is the best type of caulk to use?

    Invest in storm windows

If your casements are metal, caulking won't help the transfer of cold right trough the steel frame. Look into outside or inside storm windows. You need to create an air gap with 2 pieces of glass.

  • If you live in NY Go to the NYSERDA web site. With "Home performance with energy star" program you can get a $5000.00 grant to replace the windows.

    Casements

If the weatherstripping is good, you should not need to caulk the outside. Could be difficult to get them operating again in the spring. Casements are inherently easy to seal tight, compared to double-hungs. The single pane vs. double pane distinction is far less important than the replacement window industry would have you believe. With windows, the bulk of the heat loss is generally via air leakage, not through the panes.

    Joe is right

The best storm windows will give you the air gap you need, buy the double track, you get a much tighter fit and the screen on top isn't all that bad. You can tighten up casements with weather stripping, I also like to lock the top in place to keep the weather stripping tight.
