We have (from what I can figure out) a 3-pipe hot water system. One pipe system is not working, while the other 2 work just fine. I've tried bleeding the individual convectors, but it doesn't help. I really don't want the expense of hiring a contractor to come in, if it isn't necessary. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!0 -
3 zones?
You mean you have three zones or loops and one does not heat?
Does it have three pumps (circulators) or does it have one pump (circulator) and three electrically controlled valves (zone valves), or maybe a combination of both?
Might be a bad zone valve, a bad circulator, a bad circulator relay, even a bad thermostat, or it might be trapped air in the cold zone/loop. Have you had trouble w/ air before? Since bleeding does not help, it may not be air. We need to know more.

These offers of free assistance show real class. Deb's email provider is the Illinois Rural Telecommunications Company. If anybody is in the Jacksonville, IL area, perhaps they can help out.0 -
Location of Jacksonville
is about halfway between Springfield,IL and Hanibal, Missouri, about 1.5 to 2 hours north of St. Louis. Unfortunately, I'm about 3 hours north of there.

Deb, As you can see from the replies we do not have enough information. I will provide free help if you are in Upstate NY. If not you need to post a picture of the boiler piping so we can see what you have. Im sure we can help you if we get more information. Please thank your husband for serving our country. I for one sincerely appreciate his sacrifice and efforts. Mike0 -

If you are in or near eastern Pa.0 -
WOW! I'm overwhelmed!
Thanks so very much to all of you who offered assistance! I was completely astounded when I finally found time this weekend to check my e-mail. Thank you.
As for my heating...It's a 3 LOOP system. There is a spigot at the beginning of each 3 loops and HOT water comes out of the one that doesn't heat. Does this help?0 -
More Info from ARMY wife
Here are some answers to questions
> You mean you have three zones or loops and one does not heat?
***Right. 3 It is a 2 story house. One heats the downstairs bedrooms, one heats the upstairs and those are both fine. The one that heats the kitchen/utility room area is the one with the problem.

****Just one pump, but I'm pretty certain this was put in around the 1950's so I'm not sure about the electrically controlled valves. There is a hand-turnable valve on each 3 pipes; does that help? (After examining the boiler closer it may have been put in closer to the 70s because it actually has a ENERGY GUIDE sticker on it-its an OLD sticker though) I have the original manual, but there are no dates that I can find on it. It is a WEIL-McLAIN Model VHE (Series 2) Natural gas-fired induced draft boiler---but obviously the boiler works just fine!

We only lived in this house for a month before my husbands unit got activated, so I have no idea about prior air trouble. Some air hisses out when I try to bleed them and like I posted before, there is a spigot at the end of each of the loops. The one that doesn't work still has HOT water coming from it when I turn it on. The water force isnt strong though, so may be some clogging in the pipe before it reaches the convectors?
Thanks for any and all the help and especially the support and prayers for our troops!!

Thanks but I'm too far from all of you!
I really do appreciate the offers of free assistance, but I am located in Central Illinois about an hour west of Springfield. I didn't notice this was a New England site when I posted, sorry for the confusion. I'll try to get a photo of my system, to help with any ideas. I was hoping this was something relatively simple that I could repair myself. My husband is in Baghdad since March and is not due back until April, so I've been attempting to learn as much as possible about home repair on my own. Please let me know if you really think I should just contact a local professional. Thanks again for all your kindness!0 -
Deb
It is not an New england site. theres just alot of us form the area. There are members if this site all over the country and the world and they are the best of the best.
If you are getting air hissing out of the bleeder ( up in the room ) then it is an air problem. TRying opening the bleeder untill you get water, then shut it off. This is THE most common problem and might be the culprit.
If not, please let one of these fine gentleman help out. I have learned a Great Deal about helping others in need from these men.
Good Luck and stay with us, we'll work it out.

Air
Deb, when bleeding air from your boiler system, make sure the pump is not running. Turn off main power to the system, and bleed from the highest point possible. If that is the boiler drain on the manifold, shut the little valve below it before attempting to bleed air.0 -
Thanks-I'll try that
I've been bleeding it with the system on. I hope that didn't cause any problems.
Thanks,

Proud
Wow, your responses is why I am proud of what I do, because it is'nt always about the money!! I am sad when I see people have stopped the flag waving, when it is still very much and will always be needed! I hope people never forget, EVER, and I am glad to be in such proud and honorable company!
My Family and friends have all returned safely but my yellow ribbon is still around the tree in my front yard, and when my son asked why is it still? I told him because there are still people out there who have not returned to their families yet..and then he said when he gets bigger he wants to join the army and fix boilers, I could not be prouder..(He's 5yrs. Old!)
A Thank you to all who serve, and do what they do, so I can do what I do!
I'm in CT if anyone needs me here.

Help in Illinois from old Rep.
Deb:
Please call and speak to Bob Schwalb at Comfort Sales. I spoke to him today and he has many contacts in your area. I told him that we are looking for someone that would do this pro-bono/no charge and he stated that would not be a problem. Bob will not be in the rest of today but asked that you call him tomorrow at 618-656-1655. I will email you directly just in case you do not come to this site.
Good luck and tell your husband that we all appreciate his efforts and the efforts of all of our service men and women.

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!
and what planet are you from?! I am so honored and amazed at the generosity of all of you!! I cannot even believe how nice you all are! Thank you so much. I tried bleeding for around 5-10 minutes but it didn't do anything. Someone mentioned 2 days--do you mean I should leave it open for that long? Yes, maybe I should make the phone call. Thank you all soo much for your help; I cannot thank you enough! May God bless all of you!
Thanks,
Deb0
