PRV Safety question

the relief valve manufacturers instructions. I know that the ones I deal with do NOT allow the waste to go up vertically before going horizontally. I would make the boiler as secure as you can. THere's a lot more to get into than just the relief valve.

    PRV Safety question

Have a long time customer with a boiler that sits in the middle of the semi-finished basement which is also used as a play area. Their son is now 3 years old and "gets into everything".

I'm concerned about the relief valve which sits about 2' off the floor. If the boy trips it he will certainly be scalded.

Can we pipe the outlet up about 5', over about 10' and down to a sump or is there a problem with piping a relief valve up and that far away.

Or does anybody have any other suggestions?

    Thanks, rudy

Yea, I figured going up wouldn't be a possibility, looks like it may be time to build a couple of foot high enclosure around it.

    Thanks for the input.

    Doesn't the code

in your area require the relief to be piped to a safe location?

    Amazing

I find it amazing that someone would be so against denying their child anything, that they wouldn't have the sense to make the boiler area physically off limits.
  • not a good idea

If the relief valve pops, due to testing or actual over-pressure condition, water will remain in the 5' section of pipe and cause future valve damage (leaking or not releasing at all due to sediment and rust build up) Isolate the boiler with some type of cage until the child gets older...the rest of the boiler is hot too.

ABSOLUTELY NEVER GO UP WITH RELIEF VALVE PIPING

That is an absolute no-no. That piping should be piped down to the floor and no higher than 6" above finished floor. If you are worried, have a pro, pop a hole in the concrete and make some kind of funnel darin if you are worried about splashing. Yeah! and just keep that boy away from that area. Mad Dog

I hear ya but you know how it is today..........

"The plumber never told us the boiler was potentially dangerous to children....we called our lawyer...." just like: "You mean Mc Donalds coffee is served so hot it could scold my privates???? Oh my I'm suing." I will put the broken record on the turntable again: A nice quick, easy, and facinating read: The Death of Common Sense, How law is suffocating America, by Philip K Howard, Esquire. Yeah Rudy , I would put

that in writing and make them sign it. We do that anytime that safety is a an issue. Because they will turn arouind in a minute when the lawyers get to them and deny you ever "told" them it was dangerous. CYA!!!!! Mad Dog

    Just got off the phone

Just got off the phone with Bruce, my 'No job is too small' remodeling contractor. You guys are right, there's more than the PRV that should be kept out of touch of children (their 3rd is coming this week...) - and most adults.....

The owners (it's a rental) told me tonight to do whatever needed to be done. He's going to look at building a removable 4' wall around it. Liability aside, it's one less thing to loose sleep over.

Hey, I've got an idea. What if we start a "One of the stupidest ways I burned myself when I was a kid" threads? I've got a great one we could start out with!!
