You need to get
a copy of the NFPA 54 handbook
This has both the code and explanations of the how and whys. Including good pictures! It also has the updated requirements for combustion air, which have changed in the last few years.
Make sure which version and year of the code your local inspectors are going by. In my area they still use the 1999 version.
Lots of great info in this book, take a weekend and read through it.
