Thermostatic Union?

I am trying to get some input on what the function of a 180 Degree Thermostatic Union is. I believe it is to prevent condensation in the boiler, but I cannot seem to find a spec sheet on it even after I Googled it. A link to such a place would be greatly appreaciated.

    looked Ultimate had it in their I&O Manual, but it's been a while. Tried their web-site, nada!
