This drop-header craze has got to stop!!!!!!

Those two extra elbows will save you an hour, and in addition, they allow more freedom to expand in a two riser boiler. On a one riser boiler, it wouldn't add much to the job.

Do you work in any little basements in Manchester-by-the-Sea? Anything under 3000 sq. ft. of basement?

I bet that boiler WILL have two risers, now that I think about the area and the height of that basement....

    I know what you mean

We are going to do a steamer next week and I was all cranked up to do a drop header and join the club. We've got about seven feet above the boiler before the supplys so its really not necessary.

To bad I wanted to do it.

Great work Maddog. I like the paint.

    Yes it will

Boiler will be a Burnham IN8, and of course there will be two risers. How would those two ells save me time ? Are you talking about lining it up ?

We will do a nice little house next week with a little munchkin and a buderus panels. A Nice Little job for us :).

Wait till you see the panel we built in the shop last week. Its on the job now and being installed. Chris A and I both are "huge" on this one.

    does a drop header

do much for a single main steam system?
  • Mad Dog
    Mad Dog Member Posts: 2,595
    That's what this house has....

just a single 2" steam main. A drop header is an asset to ANY steam system as it forcefully segregates the steam from the condensate. Mad Dog

  • By joining the 2 risers out of the boiler

by dropping the header you do not have to get that last nipple between the tees the exact size to make the boiler header up . By dropping the header it gives you leeway , and also gives the pipes some expansion space . Pontential time saved could be 15 minutes to an hour - and you will get drier steam , so the saying goes . Don't forget to post some pics of that job Scott .

    radiant zone.??

mad dog job looks great. have you any problems using the condensate to do a radiant zone. i thought i read somewhere that running that mudleg water thru pex wouldnt work well over time. or are you using a heat excanger to keep things seperate.

    keep up the great work

    Sweeeet!

That is beautiful! Love the look of big black iron piping, seems almost a sin to cover it w/ insulation!

    Two questions though:

    1. What's the beige cylindrical thing to the right w/ the two water lines and a gas line to it? ;-)

    2. (Seriously) shouldn't the draft regulator be higher up (or even past the flue elbow, though not too close to the chimney)?
  • Great work Matt

I see you're crossing over to oil , do you install alot of em ? What do you think of the V8 series ? I love using them for steam . I always seem to have a nice steady water line while steaming with these babies . One thing you might want to look into is moving the draft damper closer to the chimney . I used to put em as close to the boiler as possible also - because thats what the damper instructions said . By moving it closer to the chimney you can cut down on the " Riello Roar " quite alot . Great work once again Matt .

    Thanks man.....no thats'

a cash-acme expansion tank for the hot water baseboard and radiant zone. I'm pulling a small zone of baseboard off of the tankless coil...as well as a radiant zone. As Ron Said, I try to go by "The manufacturers specs" by placing it closer to the unit. But I will start to experiment.Mad Dog

    Thanks Ron...I will try that.........

I've always done oil (or was willing to), but I'd say 75% of our boilers are gas. I love oil, and try to convince people to keep it even on oil to gas conversion estimates!!!!! Oil takes a lot more skill to work on and service - it can be quite challenging to get a quirky burner going as you know. I'd say I'm an intermediate when it comes to oil burners, but I keep learnin. I've managed to convince quite a few, but some are pre-decided. Yeah I love the V-8. If I can't get a v8 I like Peerless too

Actually, I pulled it off of the tankless coil

which is used for a small baseboard zone and the radiant. I've pulled steam condensate thru pex when people want an economical radiant job. Is it the best for the mixing valve ???no, but people have to make there choices. I've got several out there working for over 6 years...no problems. Mad Dog

    Ron Jr. and Matt...

It cuts down on the noise from all burners on ANY center flue boiler!

I went round and round with one job trying to figure out how to quiet this style flue down, and found with Burnham especially, the closer to the breech(within reason) the damper was, the quieter it seemed to the customer. I hated doing conversions in slab houses, like Ron does with the old boiler in the kitchen. When the boiler was moved to the garage, the roof pitch was about 18" above the flue outlet. Made for some noisy beasts!Chris

    Joe,

Most steam boilers are now equipped with tappings to run an indirect off of them. If the boiler you choose to use has them , you can always run a plate exchanger, or a tankless (sidearm) heater to run the radiant zone off of.
I have run into this on numerous occassions, and frankly, most steam boilers are oversized enough that this presents problems rarely. Just make sure to measure and verify that you'll be able to make it work on the worst day of the year ! Chris
