Make-upWater

For the steam experts...What is the "normal" amount of make-up water to be added to a new, tight one-pipe system? I've heard of some folks claiming to hardly ever have to add any (with manual feeds)and I've heard others recommend against using an automatic feed because it will mask a leak problem because the homeowner will always see the proper level in the glass not realizing that they have a leak somewhere that is constantly being made up. What do the experts have to say about this? Thanks.
