Flue question

in a earlier post, I am installing a new boiler for my daughter and her family. I need to get the new one completed as far as possible for the change over.

This question involves the flue piping. Is it ok to tie-in the new boiler to the chimney while the old one is still firing? The new one is going in their garage (converted to a boiler room) and will be connected to the chimney a little higher and opposite of the old flue. The chimney is lined.

Thanks,

Jack

Jack, I would say it would probably be ok to get it all piped up for the sake of measurements. but then until you're ready to put the new one in service and take the old one out of service. I would remove the new pipe and put a cap in the new crock/thimble and make sure it is sealed tight. Caps are not that expensive.

The reason I say this is because it is very possible that you'll loose your draft in the chimney to the system that's sitting idle waiting to be placed in service.

    I hope that helps.

    Thanks, Alan.

The first fitting is a piece of metalbestos so it should be easy to cap that off. It's the way I'll go.
