New setback question

During numerous I=B=R classes and Burnham training seminars with Mr. Jim Roche it was fully ingrained into this concrete skull of mine that setback on a residential steam system should not exceed + or - 4 degrees.
Does this way of thinking still hold true?

I dissuade my customers from exceeding those limits as a means of energy conservation. If it's a comfort issue, I tell them to do what ever makes them happy.

  • Unless you go with

the intelligent thermostat designed for steam, they cause callbacks for overshooting, and for cold pipe condensate noises.

The clue is that they occur at the same time each weekday.

Bill Wolfe's got a good thermostat, but they will aggrevate problems that haven't been solved yet. In themselves, they are a good thing. On a good system, your 4-5° work for me. No harm would be done by more, but calls would go up with questions about the noises.

    It can work.
