Electric carpet market heats up
Yomiuri Shimbun
Electric carpets are convenient household appliances that are safe for all ages as they are designed to heat a designated area at low temperature. While their basic function is to warm the feet of the user, a growing number of models have been developed recently offering features such as higher heat efficiency.
Last month's best-seller at a branch of an electronics chain in Shinjuku, Tokyo, was Sanyo Electric Co.'s SYC-MV20C model. The device's heating element is divided into three areas, allowing users to heat only a certain section by choosing one of four options: all areas, left area, right area, center. An insulator made of thick fabric is attached underneath to prevent heat escaping into the floor.
Similarly, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co's National brand product, DC-2LH2, offers high thermal efficiency through the use of expandable materials.
Fujitsu General Ltd.'s HC-20JWD model reportedly reduces emissions of electromagnetic waves by 99 percent.
Prices of heated carpets range from several thousand yen to more than 10,000 yen for the top models.
Yet even in warmer weather, the devices have their uses as a rug. For this reason, makers offer a range of models featuring from simple to fancy designs and pleasant textures that are soft to touch.
Some models target households with young children, including a flat-woven rug designed to reduce dust and a machine-washable model that can be easily cleaned.
Manufacturers also have introduced models with the appearance of wood flooring or tatami mat, allowing users to select a model that suits the room where it will be used.
