auto feeders are not always a good idea. they mask system leaks. instead of knowing how much water you are adding and realizing it is too much, the feeder is adding the water and has no idea what is too much water. in a tight system you should only add water about once a month not every other day. adding water regularly will dramaticly reduce boiler life. adding a water meter will help keep track of how much water is added. i believe burnham is now requiring the new feeders with water meters built in. have a good steam pro go through your system.

    Sleepless Nights! Please Help Me!

I just moved into a 100 year old house that has steam heat. I upgraded my heating system and added an automatic feed system so I would not have to fill the boiler every other night. I also added new vents on every radiator. That works fine!
Now I get this annoying hammering sound coming out of 2 rooms. Every time the boiler comes on it sounds like King Kong is walking through my house. Please advise. I live in River Rouge, Michigan.

It sounds like you either have too much water going into the system, it is surging , or perhaps both. If this is new since the auto-feed, those are the two things that I would look toward. If it had existed before, look for any place that water could have trapped in the steam mains. Were any pipes pushed to accomodate work being done? I have seen this happen more than once, creating a trap for returning condensate. Are the main valves open on those radiators, and are the steam vents at least slightly open?
