How long for boiler replacement
Wayco Wayne
Member Posts: 615
the middle of a boiler replacement. I've taking out an old oil fired ARC cast iron beastie, and am replacing it with a sleek new Buderus 115. The job's going well but at the end of the day I'm not as far along as I thought I should be. How long should a residential boiler job take? What factors into projecting the cost of a job. Part of the longer time is I'm installing Primary Secondary piping and moving the location of the fill valve and expansion tank, not just hooking things up the way they were. I was high bidder on this job and I still feel I didn't charge enough. What do you look for when bidding a job and how much time do you apply for each item?

Every job has different
time factors based on how much repipe is to be done. If we can't build a panel in our shop before we take out the old piping, we try to prefab as much as possible to reduce the down time.

boiler replacement
With primary secondary and all else you stipulate, out of the blue, 3 days 2 men for a good job.0 -
Thanks
Thanks for your replys. 3 days is about what I'm looking at so your guess is about right, Tim. I'm used to replacing furnaces which take about a day. I priced 2 days for this job so I'm working without a profit on this one. Pre-fabbing a panel would have helped on this one as we ended up building one on the job site. I'll send picures. It's looking very nice. (JMHO). If someone wrote a book on consideration for piping panels I'd buy it in a NY second. It doesnt come easy to me and experience is hard to come buy in this scorched air kinda town. WW

It's All ...
... in the way you look at it. ">>So I'm working with out a profit on this one<<"
C' mon Wayne, Are you having fun ? Are you learning anything? Did you wake up on this side of the lawn?
Hey if you gave up a days pay to go hunting and got nothing , you still went hunting right?
Make the best of it, because I know when I work past quitting time every day I am working for free. This used to make a knot in my stomach and get me upset.
A bad day of installing boilers has got to be better than any day of working on a furnace! Hey I think that would be a good bumper sticker.
Experience often comes with a price, that is why it is so valuable.0 -

What Bill said.......0 -
Ha!
Bill you hit the nail on the head. The comparison to hunting is priceless. I was having the same thoughts myself today. I'm loving this job. It wasn't long ago when I would have just pulled out the old boiler and slipped one in under the same pipes. That's what I'm bidding against with the local oil company. Now, I'm not Heatboy, (Sounds like a play, no that was "I'm not Rappaport") but this job is looking good. The Homeowner is away and when he returns I would love to see his jaw drop when he sees the transformation of his boiler room. I know how to charge better for my time next time. (I swear, really)

hey Wayne...
are we gonna get to see some pictures???? Hope so! kpc0 -
Hey Kevin
Pictures are impending. I just got the burner going yesterday and need to neaten up the wires and run the pipes from the PT valves and such things. I had trouble with the Reillo burner when I went to tighten the wire into the L terminal I missed the gap and with the wire and then stripped the screw. I really didn't turn that hard I swear. It took a while to get a replacement sub base for the transformer, so the job went on even longer. Sigh. Some days the slope is up hill. Running great now though.

timing
i find that what ever i estimate on in time is always under what i thought it always takes longer espacally if it's oil and you would like to clean it in the future for a 4 section new zone valves and a tankless with a mixing valve piprd with a cooling leg as per instruction pump on supply by pass line all electrical work high and low and replacing everything and flue'oil lines and setting everything up purging and clean up is a long no lunch no stop 10 to 12 hours with job clean up some times i believe i'm getting slower as i get older but i know the other guy isn't pricing it to do all this work plus who wants to go back on a boiler job a month later to do battle with a old pump or zone valne that the custemer believes that they shouldn't pay for every job is different and because it took you longer you should know it's because mostly you wouldn't settle for sub stanard quality on work that carries your name it's know as pride that why you can't let thing just be as they are and you strive for only the best to be your standard it's a dying art quality work any body can slam it in leave and convince themsleves that it good and maybe get the custemer to believe it to but you know the difference and you live itR.A.
