Radiant heat

Could you use baseboard(without the jacket) installed under a wood floor instead of plastic tubing? Would that be better or worse Than Pex?

one of my employees did this............

and it works very well. I wouldn't even bother with the radiation. In theory the fins are there to create more surface area for air to "rub" against and be heated as cool air passes through the baseboard. Copper tubing or pex tubing suspeneded in the bay will work nearly as well. You need to leave a 2" air gap when youinsulate below it. The air serves as a "mass" that will spread the heat across the bay somewhat evenly. You will still have some striping across the floor but you can live with it. A friend of ours, who had a tight budget, used suspended pex tubing in an addition and it heats very well. The supply temps need to be much higher but if your adding on to a cast iron boiler - it is not a bad idea. Do a good heat loss to make sure that the space can be heated this way. Its not the best way but it still creates a radiant floor.

    p.s.

be sure that the floor temp does not get too high if it is a finished hard wood floor.
