Pigtails will be above the water line on steam boilers, but the exact location will differ depending on manufacturer design.

On larger boilers you will mainly find them set higher than on smaller boilers.

The pigtail will fill it's loop with water via condensate to act as a buffer so live steam doesn't contact your controls or gauge and cause damage.

Proper installation dictates that the pigtail loop is perpenticular to the control face(this is more important for mercury switches) to avoid control rocking.

I've never seen a pigtail coming off of the sight glass directly, typically if it's connected to the water column it will be before the glass on the chamber steam connection.

I've seen pigtails come out of the top of the low water cuttoff as usual, but also coming out of a tee installed at the top of the water gauge glass. These pigatails housed both the pressurtrol and boiler guage. I've also seen TWO pigtails come out of a tee on the low water cutoff, one for the pressurtrol and one for the gauge glass! I,ve heard that they should be installed high above the water line and seen some pressurtrols level with the top of the boiler, not on the front side just above the low water cutoff. WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY to install these pigtails (and there connected pressutrol and gauges) to ensure long life and accurate function? LEON in NJ
