Steamer (Day One) - DF

This one is located about halfway between Warrenton and Marshall in Virginia Hunt country. The homeowner owns about 600 acres with several out-buildings and the manor house built in the 1930's. It is a one pipe steam system with lots of problems. Hopefully we can restore it to it's original glory. With the present boiler, he was burning between 4,500-5,000 gallons on oil per winter. I can see why. There was only one bullet vent on the system. All the air had to vent through the radiator vents. -DF

Out with the old
This is the old HB Smith Mills boiler, coal converted to oil. The homeowner had the asbestos removed before we started the tearout. It was messy but easier than expected. -DF

In with the new
We are replacing this one with a Burnham V-9 oil fired boiler. We are also repairing some leaks, replacing all the vents, and adding several Gorton #2's to the main. The tankless heater will supply a 100 gal. storage tank for DHW. I'll be curious how much fuel he burns this winter. Thanks to Noel, Steamhead, MD, et.al., for inspiring me to try a drop header on this job. -DF

Very chunky header Dan...........I'm getting aroused..........
Nice, beefy fittings. Always my favorite part...building the header. Md0 -
I'll bet
you never build another non-drop header again, or use several Hoffman #75 vents together on the same main.
