Odor in a closet

I have a strange odor in our library closet. There is both a heating vent and a plumbing vent pipe located within the back wall of the closet. A plumbing contractor assured me that the odor was not escaping sewer gas.Could the odor possibly be coming from the heating duct? The odor is only in the closet and I can not see or smell anything peculiar around the furnace or the hot water heater. Thanks Lee
Retired and loving it.

closet odor
What is the vent pipe made of? If plastic, mostlikely not the problem. IF cast iron, it could have a crack in it.
If it was in the heating duct, you would most likely smell it throughout the house.
I've found problems like this and sometimes it has been a dead squirrel or other rodent in the wall.....just a thought!
