  • Steps for Pilot out

I gave some info on Tips for Winter post which I will put back up for you.

In addition to those you need to take some millivolt readings:

Open circuit should be between 25 to 35 millivolts no less than 17 to 18 if less clean the pilot or replace thermocouple.

Closed Circuit should be roughly half of the open circuit or about 15 millivolts.

Then bring the burner on and watch the meter the readings should remain steady maybe up or down a millivolt or two but no more.

Then blow the pilot out the magnet should drop out with an audible click at less than 6 millivolts. If more than that the valve will need to be replaced.

The other things to look for is lack of combustion air in the room and poor draft which should be resolved by conducting a combustion analysis and Carbon Monoxide test on the equipment to determine if it is burning correctly.

    gas pressure

you may want to check the gas pressure at the valve, i performed a service call last fall, pilot kept going out. i relit the pilot, sounded noisy, lift off, checked gas pressure, it was high 8.5" w.c. for nat gas. reduced to 4-4.5 and haven't had a call back. good luck
  • How did you reduce

    the pressure to the pilot?

    pilot

Most gas valves have a adjustment for the pilot. But the problem was more likely the draft produced by the high gas pressure when the valve kicked on, and blew the pilot out or pulled it out.

  • I ask that question

because combination gas valves do not regulate pilot gas. The regulator in the gas valve will regulate main burner pressure only. The pilot adjustment screw does not adjust pressure but adjusts flow, it is simply a throttling screw.

    pilot out

Friend of mine got a service call, and a window was left open and when he went in to check the pilot assembly for proper hight, etc., he felt the draft from the window. Would blow the pilot out.
