Gorton Vents

but I don't know which model. They are graduated with a pointer cast into the handle. The HO adjusts them as he wants, so I don't think they're balancers to the point of throwing out the rest of the system.

    website ?

A distributor in WNY ? What's special about them as compared to Hoffman ?
Another related subject : Is there someone who makes replacement parts for Hoffman #8 traps ? Hoffman website says to replace the trap with a #8c. Will do if I have to, but could really save time and keep the chrome finish of the #8's if I could keep them.
    TIA,

    URLs

    Gorton: www.gorton-valves.com

The Gorton #2 main vent has a capacity that equals that of 4 Hoffman #75 vents but costs only as much as one #75. If you don't need that much capacity, the Gorton #1 has the same capacity as the Hoffman #75. Gorton's vents are very well made and if properly sized will last a long time.

I don't know if Gorton has a distributor in your area but if you contact them they can tell you. Talk to Ken Kunz and tell him I sent you. They will also sell direct to you if there is no distributor in your area.

For trap replacement parts, go to

    Barnes & Jones: www.barnesandjones.com

    or Tunstall: www.tunstall-inc.com

Both these sites have online catalogs so you can look up the right part for your traps. I find that replacing the element in a trap is quicker and less expensive than replacing the entire trap.

Why repair the trap at all. Just install an orafice in the supply. It lasts practically forever and is much cheaper. I don't replace radiator traps anymore.I've installed a lot of them and have great results.

I don't know where you are located but I get them from Pronto Supply in NYC 212-777-3366. I believe they get them from Tunstall referred to earlier. You can get them in different sizes, from 1/2" to 2". I get them either blank or with a very small hole. Then I drill them out myself if I need more steam in a radiator. You want to run the system on very low steam and then you have to make sure the radiators get totally hot on a very cold day. On warmer days they don't heat up all the way. It does take a little figureing out, but it allows you to never use or replace traps and that is a huge benefit. Dan refers to them in the Lost Art.

    sounds like

it could be a PITA in disguise. On the coldest day of the year, when I'm up to my eyebrows in "no heat" calls, I'm going to be "adjusting" a system that could've been "done" 2 months prior ?

It looks like traps have come a long way over the years, in regards to materials of construction, and should be fairly trouble free for quite a while.

I like automatic. I also like smiling customers and less "tweaking".

    Orifices will work

but you have to make sure they're sized properly. They're not hard to adjust once you get the hang of it.

That said, if the system has radiator traps I'd just rebuild the traps. This way you stay with the original design and don't have to tweak anything.

Thanks for saving another great old Vapor system.

    Check with Tunstall

Tom Tunstall tells me they can rebuild those old hand valves.

Are those Hoffman #7 valves? If so, they have shutters in them for balancing the system. Make sure you leave them in the same position you found them in, or the system may go out of balance.

    Probably #7

that's what they sound like from your description. The shutter is a separate piece, not connected to the handle. You can see the shutter if you disconnect the valve and look in the opening that goes into the radiator tailpiece.
