the Arco Model K, the NY Thermal System, the Bi-Loop Vapor system and one version of Trane Vapor are but a few examples. My post stands firmly on the shoulders of many Dead Men.

    dies anyone use steam

In new residential construction? I have one steam system in my residence and two steam systems in a two family I own. I love them. Simple, fast, no moving parts quiet (sort of) and warm. I am thinking of buying another muli family home. It was renovated recently and the owners ripped out the old steam systems and installed new hot air units. Oh well.

  • I've put in steam from scratch

Steamhead can, Mad Dog has, Ron, Jr. can, Boilerpro can, I think Dan Foley too. and I bet 10 more of the guys that post here have.

It takes a customer like yourself that appreciates it, or a guy that adds on to a house that has a steam boiler that is twice the size of the system it's connected to, and wants to use the same boiler.

It's the most fabulous heat to live with.

It has the most maintenance hours, though.

  • The closest I came to

installing a steam system from scratch was in Astoria , NYC . New steam boiler , new oil tank , and all new 2 inch main piping and 1 1/4 riser piping to around 10 or 11 existing radiators . And it was all in black steel - my partner Chris P. Chicken threaded almost all of it by hand using a crappy little non electric Ridgid threader . Needless to say , Chris's arms are like tree trunks today .

Steam is a dying art - fewer and fewer people know how to service it , and many fewer would know how to install it from scratch . And that's a shame , because almost every homeowner we work for who has steam would not give it up for any amount .

    A modern steam system

would use cast-iron baseboard connected 2-pipe, orifices at the inlet valves, dry returns, a central air vent in the basement, and a Vaporstat to limit the system to 8 ounces or so. With a modern steam boiler this system would perform as well as hot water, with fewer moving parts, take up minimal space in the rooms, and not use any more fuel. Its biggest advantage is that it would not freeze during an extended power failure.

This is the system I want to build next.

  • I hear that

    Vapor heating by Steamhead.

It'll be in the next edition of The Lost Art, right after the Donnely system.

    And rightly so.

    I wou;ld follow steamheads advice...............................

I BUILT MINE FRON SCRATCH last year with antique radiators, which is great , but maybe not practical for you. but since you love steam, I'd guy steamheads plan some seroius thougt.....you could downsize the piping quite a bit with 2 pipe too!!! Mad Dog
