no water appears in sight glass

NEVER add water to a hot boiler unless you know theres water in it. If you don't know this let it cool. The sightglass valves should both be open. Take the bottom valve out and water should run out the stem if the water level is at least minimal. If you flush your low water cut off and water comes out nicely and the boiler stops if running this is good, it's just a block in the gauge glass connecting pipe. You may not know this but steam boilers explode on a fairly regular basis because of low water level problems. May be time to get a pro in, well worth the cost of 3 months cable TV.

no water appears in sight glass
I fed water in to my residential steam boiler. It is a Burnham.
No water appears in the sight glass, no matter how much water I feed into the boiler. Why is there no water appearing in the sight glass. Usually water level is at the half-way point in sight glass. Could it be dirt in the line where the water goes into the sight glass?
Also, above the sight glass there is a valve and below the sight glass there is a valve. Should these valves be opened or closed?
Also, I have one baseboard radiator that only gets slightly warm and only on the right hand side. The left hand side stays cold. What could be the reason for this? Should I clean the release valve on the radiator to see if it is plug with dirt or rust?

low water cut off
I have a gas boiler. I have a Mcdonnell and miller low wate cut off. When the water level gets low the unit cuts on and operates a water feeder mcdonnell and miller wf2 24 the water flows into the boiler. The unit will continuer to feed water beyond the level on the water sight glass. Sometimes the unit flows water even though the water level is not low. We just changed the probe on the low water cutoff, but with the same results. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mcdonnel miller
Calvin - your post appeared as a reply to someone elses post. You will get better results posting from the main page... Those water feed low water cut offs are usually very problematic. Ocassionally good for making swiming pools out of upstairs bedrooms when it won't shut off the water and fills the entire system... There is likely a problem with the float sticking but, I would change it out and modernize the low water cut off system. - Just my 2 cents. - Good luck0
