Crown ODV

I installed a FW Crown boiler a few years ago and yes, the Shipping tag on the casting had the name "Weso" on it. Although it is not the same exact casting as the Viessmann Rondomat, it is made by the same foundry I think. The burner door is exactly the same, but the casting on the Rondomat has fins inside the combustion chamber, the Crown FW is smooth. Maybe heatboy can tell us more. By the way, if your looking for the best oil fired boiler nothing sold in the U.S. beats the Viessmann Vitola. Nothing..... Of course the gargantuan craniums at Viessmann engineering will probably never offer a kit to directly pipe the combustion air to their burners. Makes you wonder......could they be right? What do 9 out of 10 wet heads say I wonder?

Crown ODV
Has anyone used or have any opinions on Crown Freeport ODV direct vent oil fired boiler ? Was going to go with the Buderus G115 direct vent setup until I came across the Crown .

Both Good choices
I have installed both and they are both good choices. The Crown comes with the Carlin EZ burner, and the exhaust flex piping is construction is cool. It is double wall flex tubing, the inner wall is stainless, on top of that is a layer of insulation, then a layer of aluminum flex. VERY quiet operation. Casting made in Germany. Very good boiler for the money.
The Buderus is also a three pass boiler but holds a little more water (a good thing), and you can also use the Carlin burner with it. Buderus also sells the Riello BF series burner but looks like they have been having problems with the post purge control lately. I have a few in w/ no problems whatsoever, and I read here on the wall that Riello has fixed the problem with a new control that is coming out soon. Just call your Buderus rep to make sure you get this new control.
Did'nt make that decision any easier huh?

I was looking at both boilers myself for my new house. I ended up with the G115 and have been very pleased. I also run the Riello BF3...and it is quiet. I actually installed the boiler outside the house in an "boiler shed" just to keep the noise outside (I have no basement and didn't want to hear the roar in the utility room), but not so sure it would have been all that much of a roar. Compared to my parents new Utica Boiler in their house, the G115 is whisper quiet. Now, mine is the 61000 BTU/HR vs. there 130,000 or whatever, way oversized by the way, but I am pleased.
Oh yes...I currently do not have a post purge control on my BF3. It DID FAIL...and it was removed and bypassed...and the new one should be installed soon.
When IT FAILS, and the heat fails, and things freeze, I wonder who will be responsible??? I should bring this up with my installer when he returns with the control.

I'm gonna get crap for this, but...................
I won't direct vent or even power vent oil fired equipment any longer. I have used power venters for years with no issues to date, so I know it can be done. And I'm sure the ODV and Buderus work well. I just don't feel good about it with the crap for fuel used nowadays. The risk isn't worth it to my business. Once the fuel is cleaned up, I may, and probably will, change my mind again. Since the Vitodens works so well with propane, I have no compuction about venting this boiler through the wall.

Here's your crap
Just kidding buddy. I admire you for sticking to what you believe, and I don't disagree with you whatsoever. These boilers are in fact kind of a ticking time "soot" bomb, one day ten years from now something may go wrong, wether the customer does'nt want a cleaning and tune up regularly, or a mech problem. However I find it difficult to just walk away from a job for this reason.
This is how I deal with this problem. Every one of the direct vent boilers I have installed were preceded by a lengthy browbeating of the customer as to the disadvantages of not installing a chimney. Usually after this "little talk" I get my way, which is only for the customer's own good in the long run. For those few occasions, where the husband wants oil heat, but the wife can't stand to see a beautiful chimney yes I install a direct vent boiler for them....after my lawyer written release is signed and dated.

Speaking of Crown
I was setting up two Crown FW series boilers yesterday(478mbtu each). The box that the installer put the extra parts in contained two bags from Viessman that looked liked an "oil watcher" it was clear tubing with brass barb x 1/4"ipt. The guy told me they were made in Germany and now I wonder? This appears to be a real quality unit. I wish more American companies offered a product like this.0 -
can you get...
me a copy of that aggreement or tell me what the jist of it says..? kpc0 -
Exactly.................
what I propose. If the client doesn't want to install a chimney "to save money", they must agree to sign a waiver that relieves me of any liability in the case of soot damage or discolorization of the facade caused by blocked fuel filters, nozzles, etc..

Air directly into the burner housing...........
is the worse you can do to an oil burner. It just makes sense that the colder it gets outside, the less efficient the boiler becomes due to the increased densness of the air. While it does minimize the chances of negative draft, I wonder how much fuel is wasted because of it. I would rather bring the air into the room and let it temper to room temperature before it gets in to the burn area. Doesn't that make sense or am I missing the point (as usual!).
