Fellow is converting old steam system to hot water and needs to figure the volume of the system to size the expansion tank. Any knowledge or resources out there?

    Dan's \"Dead Men's Steam School\"

video and workbook has those charts. You can order it on the Books and More page of this site.

Why is your friend doing this type of conversion? There are many pitfalls, and I have found it's easier and cheaper to fix steam systems rather then convert them. When a steam system is running properly, it equals the comfort and approaches the efficiency of hot-water. And it won't freeze.

Just need a simple approximation, not a book.

This is for a contractor/ customer that asked me, I said that I had a place where the distilled wisdom of the hydronic industry was residing and said I would go to the mountain and ask for him. As to why convert? Not mine to ask, altho there is not much steam out in this area and they suffer from neglect. Current boiler is 10 yrs old and mud legs burned thru.
