Whats the general consensus on replacing 50 gal HWH

and old boiler with a new steam boiler w/ coils(slant-fin)and an indirect storage tank?

I was talking with a heating pro, exchanging ideas.. Basically I felt 50 gal HWH wouldnt be sufficeint a few years down the line with 3 woman in the house! (no offense to any ladies on here!) And I don't have the space to fit a 75 gal.

He recommended the hot water thru the boiler's coil then into an indirect unit. I like the sound of this, not only will it be perfect for my space situation, I was also told its more efficient and running out of hot water would not be an issue during unique times of high demand down the road.

    Your professional opinions greatly welcomed!

with the indirect, but I think I would not use the coil for it because the coil has a limited output, and because you would need a relief valve, an expansion tank, a feed valve protected by a backflow preventer, as well as the pump and purge station. That's a lot of bucks for less output.

I, myself, would pipe the indirect tank as a zone of heat off the boiler water itself. I've done this very successfully for several 4 story dorms full of teen-aged girls. It worked on the Dinner-Dance night, and kept up with them. Of course, it was three 60 gallon tanks, and each had two coils in them, and mixed down with an inch & a quarter mixing valve. The boiler was 3 million BTUHs.

I like using condensate for indirect water heaters.

It will not effect your Slant/Fin boiler or water heater warranty what so ever.

Here's a good way to pipe and control it.

    Why not ...

put in a 50 or 60 gallon indirect, superstor or w-mcl plus ,prioritize it and install a sparco mixing valve. Gives you a bit more w/o any more floor space taken up. kevin Coppinger

Ok I will try to mention that

to the heating guy I talked to, although I dont want to come across as a "know it all" if you know what I mean.

I would say most heating compaines Ive called for estimates have totally been against anything other than the usual 50 gal hot water tank.

Anything from they dont work good in the winter or its hard to get parts (wait from factory)to "we dont even service them we walk way) etc etc

Then i come here, and the experts on here tell a different story!

I feel like Im in the middle!

BTW thanks for the input/help on this topic

Did the pro recommend using the boiler coil to preheat the domestic water going into the indirect ? Or did he mean to use the coil as a zone of heat for the indirect ? If it was the 2nd choice , then like Noel said , you have to pipe and wire it like a mini - boiler , and that adds up in cost and comes out to less output than connecting it right to the boiler itself .
