Slant-Fin guy, Help!!

Hey mister Slant-Fin guy!!

I was called to a house, new owners, to take a look at a Slant-Fin boiler, (Galaxy 6XH190EZ, S/N 629923) single pipe steam system. They were ready for a start up and did not even know how to turn it on.

Ok, I helped them with that.

I’ve never run across a system gunked up like that. It was gunked so bad that the skimmer port would not blow steam when I opened the valve under a full head of steam. I took pipes and the valve off and still the port to the jacket was blocked. I used a rod and opened it up and pulled load of black tar looking gunk out. It look like something from as sewer and it may have smelled before the steam, my point is that under a full head it would not blow or skim.

I have about 6’ of wet return, hard piped, below the boiler, with no drain ports.

From a Slant-Fin point of view, what cleaner and Colloid do you recommend? I have a good supply house that features the Utility brand out of Westbury, NY, however, the folks at the desk do not know if it is compatible with Slant-Fin products.

Is it? Or how would you suggest I clean this mess out.

The homeowners are not able to pay for a re-pipe of the returns.

  • Hi George

I guess the question is, "What is it?". If it floats, it probably is something that someone put into the boiler water. I don't know what will happen if you add something to it.

Normally, I would use Utility "Dry Steam #3" to clean up steam boiler water, and follow thier instructions. That boiler has metal push nipples between the sections, and no tankless coil to leak at the gasket. The only rubber is in the glass gaskets.

I'd be concerned about the pressuretrol pigtail pipe and the LWCO being plugged up too. Then I'd check the steam vents. The return will need to be checked out, too, as you said.

    I'll do

Thanx, I got busy and had to work rather than read the wall.

I check those out and use the good old #3.

Darn stuff just looks like gunk from inside a sewer pipe. Who knows?
