Thermostats

Hi, Erica. Before I can recommend a stat, I need to know some info. Do you heat with gas, if so, natural gas or propane, or do you have oil heat? Do you have central air conditioning? Is someone home all day, or is the house empty during the workday? Do you need communications capability? Any small children, senior citizens or people with health issues?

Concerning mercury, no, that isn't required, in fact, it is being phased out of thermostats. Any of our new electronic thermostats are +-1 degree accurate, and can be set to 1 cycle per hour for steam.

    Need thermostat help!

I live in Nashville, TN. I have a boiler system and still heat with radiators. Ther thermostat needs to be replaced and I'm not sure what type of thermostat to buy. It is my understanding that it should be a thermostat with mercury. Also I know nothing aobut calibration so how do I know if the thermostat is properly calibrated.

Oh by they way, your book " A Pocketful of Steam Problems" was most helpful in understanding how all this stuff works!

    Thanks,

    Thermostats

    Hi Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I heat with natural gas. No I don't have central air conditioning. I work during the day. No small children, senior citizens or people with health issues?
You reference communications capability....this is "greek to me" unless you're talking about telephones, faxes for computers.

I think the boiler was manufactured by Crane Co. and it's probably been in the house since it was built (in 1937).

This is only a suggestion and one that I am currently using, it is very user friendly and has options that are easily selected. You can find more info on this one at http://www.robertshaw.com/pressInsight.html This thermostat may cost a little more but hey what's wrong with buying a cheap one to put on the wall if or when you move and taking the stat that you will grow to know and love for it's ease of operation?

    You can choose...

either the T8002C1000, a 5/2 programmable or the deluxe T8602D2018, which is a 7 day model. Both work well with steam, are battery powered, and carry the EPA's "Energy Star" rating. These are available from your heating contractor. Thank you for considering Honeywell, for further info, go to www.honeyell.com/yourhome.
