What is this amatuer night?

Ross,

I have seen that happen over and over. Steam systems that just need a little love and tenderness, get butchered into a water system that never works right becaue it wasn't done properly. This doesn't just happen in old houses. Just about every school around here has had their steam converted to hot water. The same Engineering firm designed almost all of them. Its sad.

what a shame.

Steam Sells.. but who's buying? Amatuer Night

I have to go on a job next week at a new customers house.
Seems that the last contractor that he had there was "scared" of the existing steam system in the house, so they talked him into converting to hot water. Like I said it must have been amatuer night. The contractor ( of whom I haven't found out who it was yet) tried hooking up the hot water system to the old school steam only radiators. Of course you know the result. My guess is that they probably brushed this guy off after he started having problems with little or no heat, until the warranty ran out.Unbelieveable!
The guy loves the cast iron radiators ( God bless him!)So he wants our company to replace them with hot water radiators, along with some other work. I let you guys know the end result. SO much for professionalism!

Believe it or not Ross, a nice part of our business is

restoring these old steam systems, before they get butchered like the one you describe. Are you sure its too late to undo what he did and bring back the steam??? Hope you can. MadDog

    My thoughts.

I'm thinking of fitting electric water heater-type elements into the radiators on my next job where there is a problem with the steam system.

    Wadda ya think? Good idea?

    Sure

Just drill a hole into the top of each section and tap and air vent into each one. While your at it....... Put electric solenoids on each vent and modify them into whistles. Then you could have each radiator solenoid/whistle/vent tied into a computer that would be programmed to vent each section in a specific order. I'm talking about music here. Each rad could play a different tune so you would know which one got steam and which one didn't. You could stage each radiator in this way also, by section. Think of the possibilities here!!! You could have a huge old radiator that would give you 20 plus stages in one zone. WOW!!!!! I think I've really hit on the next big thing here!!!!! I wonder why the Germans haven't thought of this????
