Steam pics & probe LWCO question

That's a beautiful thing you've built.

  • This is a job we just finished

up in Sands Point , NY . The Weil Mclain was dry fired and needed to be changed out . That is my partner Paul on the ripout .
  • Peerless ECT 5

We had to split it in 2 to get this down . For some reason , Peerless is cheaping out and using the thinner WBV draw rods for the ECT - one rod broke while we were tightening the sections back together . Other than that , the install went smooth . We stuck around a good hour and a half to skim the boiler and clean the returns .

We always test the LWCO on startup by filling the boiler with the power on . This one came on fine . But while we were steaming and cleaning the returns , the cutoff kept the burner running with almost no water in the sight glass - which was about 3 inches lower than the LWCO . At this point I didn't want to dry fire a new boiler , so I tested it again by holding in the burner reset while I drained the boiler down . It seemed like it took a looooong time to trip the cutoff . Admittedly , the minimum water level is a few inches below the bottom of the sight glass , but I had no idea how low the water level was when the cutoff tripped . When I refilled the boiler , the LWCO turned the burner on at the proper level . Is this normal for a probe type cutoff ? We used a little Rectorseal on the probe , and no Teflon .

I already had a 67 installed on the 1st day , but I found out during the job that the elderly homeowner was just out of the hospital and there was a slim chance he would be able to make it down to clean it . So I put in the probe and feeder today .

    Delay

Ron, If i'm not mistaken the probe type LWCO has a 10 second delay on break and 15 for make the PS-801 for steam boilers is different than the PS-851 for hot water. 10 seconds does seem like a long time when you waiting.

    Hope this helps

  • Yep , I noticed the delay

when I turned the switch off and on to the boiler when skimming - 10 or 15 seconds before the burner came on . But it ran a good long time with almost no water in the sight glass , over 5 minutes . I got a little worried , so to further check it out I hooked up a 50 foot hose to the boiler drain and opened her up . With just a dribble showing in the sight glass it still took about 5 to 10 seconds before the burner shut down on low water - seems like a short time , but its an eternity at this point . I'm thinking it was just foam making the contact , we did dump in some cleaner for the skimming and return flush . Thanks Antman .
  • Thanks Noel

Once you go drop header , you never go back . The close nipple I used for the 3 inch union came up short a good inch . It was an easy fix swinging the header just a bit to make it up , and it still stayed pretty straight .
