if you convert a one pipe hot water gravity system (Simplex) to forced circulation?

Here's some pics of the Simplex valve. Thanks!

    Use a small circulator

to make sure the water doesn't short-circuit thru the rad.

    Try the chart at

    http://www.heatinghelp.com/newsletter.cfm?Id=125

    and you should be OK.

    Thanks Frank!

Do you know if there is a dip tube attached to the device to cause the water to flow THROUGH the radiator, completely?

    TIA

    Either that

or a "splitter". But you still want to mimic the gentle gravity flow. Why mess with the Dead Men's success?

    Efficiency...

The cost of natural gas ($.80/therm last year) is increasing 70% in price this winter. People are SERIOUSLY looking at their physical plants. They're just hedging a bet on their money.

Here's what's going on in my house. This is what I refer to as a "Whoopdy Do". It goes around 2-1/2 times and then mellows out. Kinda like a heat wave.

    What I meant was......

even though there is a splitter or dip tube in there, you don't want to over-pump these rads. The Dead Men's Success depended on that gentle flow.

It's been a long, though satisfying, day............

    couple of questions...

Why the indirect so hot???? 135 is pretty high...
Why supply temp. so high, won't it work on 20* diff.
How come supply temp. is lower than indirect temp. must be some of the water in the indirect is cooler than the water where the sensor is.....

    Pretty cool stuff!!!!!

    Lotsa answers...

The DHW tank is a small immersed coil in a 60 gallon tank. In order to guarantee that MRs Eatherton can fill her tub with good hot water, I have to maintain the tank at 140 degrees F with a 7 degree differential. It's an experiment. I turned it up to 180 degrees this weekend to see how it did. They system in general had a tendency to short cycle (DUH!!) I turned it back down. As soon as I get my ECL logic complete, I can turn the DHW down when no in use. THe recovery on this system is fantastic. 62,000 btu's does WONDERS for heating water. It's QUICK.

The supply temp is cooler because its doing space heating at this point. It's amazing to see the pick up and drop off of this system. When it comes off of a DHW call back to space heating it actually dumps a bubble of hot water into the system that I can hear racing around the house for a few minutes until it disipates all that energy. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with that issue as we speak. It's kinda hard on the piping system to go from 90 to 180 and back to 90 again in 3 minutes. Maybe a mixing valve or something. There are times, albeit short periods, that the return is hotter than the supply! I used to call it the roller coaster effect. Seen it before on other types of systems. Here's a drawing of the system.

Mark, how about a mixing post purge...

after DHW generation. I believe that is what tekmar does on their controls. Runs both the DHW and space heating at the same time to help prevetn system and boiler shock.
