Last week on the wall

It is interesting that in northern China, with the advance of a free market system, all the unit by unit heating controls need to be changed. Much of the housing is box style apartment blocks which had no external shutoffs. Now that everyone pays for their own heat from the district supply each of the 90 or so apartments in each building is being repiped. They are using PVC to connect the cast rads to a 2" main in the already crowded stairwells. Very strange hydronics when compared to our standards. Dan

short haul
Hi Scott. 2 days travel and 7 days on the ground. Extremely low cost food and accomodations, especially away from Beijing. I didn't try the scorpion on a stick or beaks and none of the tap water is safe. Now I'm two extra weeks behind and the weather here has turned to cold and unpleasant. China's a great destination but you'll need a translator if you get very far off the main tourist road. Dan

Did you ride the railroads?
While Doc Diesel's offspring are making inroads, much of China's rail traffic moves behind steam locomotives. They are copies of US Army and Russian locomotive designs from the 1930's & 40's, but were built new as recently as the 1990's! Those beasts slogging up those long grades in the Chinese hinterlands put on a sound and visual show that is stunning. I hope you got to see some!0
