Holding tanks

I have a limited area to work with. I have to install a Burnham V8 boiler with an Alliance 40 gallon indirect. The boiler room will only accommodate the unit. There is a crawl space 4' hi. Do the make a brace to support the tank horizontally or is there a smaller tank under 4'

Thanks
Anthony

    You might check with Burnham

to see if that tank can be installed horizontally. If so, I'd install a foundation for it rather than hang it from the floor joists- a tank full of water can be quite heavy!

    indirect tank

Others here may know more about this than me so correct me if im wrong but i believe if you mount an indirect tank on its side you will not get same perfomance as if it were mounted upright.

    horizontal mounting

Check with Phase III When they were first made and made the first W/M Plus tanks, they came with brackets to mount them on the wall or horizontally. We installed a couple that way and never had a complaint. It's possible they can still be set that way, but not sure.....

    phase 3

thats the one i was thinking of Al it came with the bracketts to mount the tank on its back. it was a long time ago but I thought the paperwork stated that you lost storage capacity. we never had any complaints but the recovery rate was high on those units. Once again i may be wrong it was a while ago.

    I have a Phase 3

on it's side in my house. Certain models had brackets for this mount, including mine. There was a derate factor in the installation manual, as I recall, for hortz mounting. They also had a special dip tube to use.

Steamhead, wouldn't a tank supported under a floor put the same load on the joist as it would above the floor? With proper brackets and fasteners the load would actually be spread over a wider footprint, underneathy, than an upright tank sitting on a 24" diameter spot on the floor.

Regardless, 40 gallons of water and the weight of the tank, probably in the 450 lb range, needs to be considered when locating the tank, above or below :)

    HR, I was thinking

the tank could be installed horizontally on the floor of the crawlspace. In our area these are usually dirt, so some sort of foundation would be needed.
