Beating a dead horse

Went out on a call today to check out a heating system that someone else installed. The customer complained of high gas bills. When I got there I found wall mount forced convection heaters. Looked fine so I asked to see the boiler... "What boiler" the customer asked. At that point I knew they were using a HWT to heat the house. I asked to see the heat source and found an A.O Smith 50% efficient HWT. I told the custmer that heating with a hot water tank is causing the high energy costs and the only way to combat the problem is to install higher efficient equipment. So the customer asks "Well how much for a furnace"? So I explained that would cost twice as much to install a complete forced air system and their current heating system would be better. To make a long story short I couldn't convince the customer hydronic would be the way to go. He just wouldn't hear it. So I explained the benefits of the zone control that he had but he still wouldn't hear it. Then he broke my heart by saying "This hydronic stuff is garbage I am going to buy a forced air system"...

don't beat yourself up over that guy

he bought the other "system" because it was cheap too. Only way to make him happy is to install for free and pay his gas bill too. Just walk away.

    what to do

my newest line is to agree with the custermer tell them they have the best even though it's garbage this way the seed is planted because every one else has told them it is garbage then when it goes they remenber you because you where the only one that agreed with them then you sell them a new system and they trust you because you where different then all the other guys and all you say is your system was good but now is the time to start over once in a while it works people love to hear what they want to hear they don't want anything negitive so just agree you can't convert them all good luck in the future
