Frank,
Here is the steam boiler in Baltimore that Steve is re-piping tomorrow. What do you think? Sorry I won't be able to make it. We will catch up another time. -DF

I've seen that piping pattern before
can't think of who does it though. No wonder the job doesn't work right!

I give up....
Which way is the water moving in the middle of that header?
Lately, I've seen more than a few people think that if they put the take-offs between the risers, that the water from the riser near the equalizer will turn right, and the steam will turn left to fight through the water from the left riser that is going to the right.
Be the water and the steam. The header is a one-way street. EVERYTHING must move in the same direction, toward the equalizer. The order of the tees is not debateable, even though it looks nicer this way.
Oh, yeah. I'm preaching to the choir. We all know that already. It's right in the installation instructions, complete with minimum dimensions.

Looks like a
Dunkirk 500,000 btu steamer. Has big 4 inch tappings on each side. Strange thing I came across a couple years ago....an about 40 year old Weil steamer that was piped with both tappings and the supply coming off the middle just like the picture, but with an offset header and in black. I believe the installation instructions were still there and that was the recommended piping layout. Apparently we've come some distance in the last 40 years.

yeh but!
By some peoples standards that guy is a mechanic, cause his solder work looks pretty good!!!! Application of Knowledge, following installation directions, and execution are what make a MECHANIC. just looking purty don't cut it. JMHO0 -
its obvious that the installer doesn't have a copy of The Lost
Art Of Steam Heating or at least he didn't read it. Which brings me to my question . In the book if I remember correctly, there should be a minimum vertical distance of 24 inches between the header and the water level in the boiler. Does this rule have to be strictly followed if you install a drop header ?0 -
It gives the room
that is one of the advatages of the drop header. It is especially useful when you can't quite make the "a" dimension it "drops" the header and gives you more room to work with. Giving you dryer steam and another set of swing joints.
I have only done a couple, about 10 years ago. I was lucky enough to have worked with an old timer who really knew his business.0 -
Have fun
can't wait to see it done. Had A big Peerless done the same way the other day in copper - a nice solder job like your one too. And check out this bute.....all cast iron, 3" but very wacky. md

A picture is always better......................................
Depends how crazy ya wanna get brother. This big boy would be fine with a good 3" double header (using both tappings and blowing them up to 3"), but if the people wanted the best Id give them the good ol' drop header. Mad Dog
