Possible LWCO problem

Our house has an old Peerless gas powered steam boiler. In light on the recent drops in temperature, it has just started kicking on once in a while. We're very good about keeping the water level at the line in the sight glass, but have only used the blowdown mechanism a few times in the year that we've owned our home. Last night, I fired it up and let the radiators get HOT. I then opened the LWCO valve and drained about a bucket and a half of brown water from the boiler. The water dropped to the bottom of the sight glass, but the burner never shut off. The LWCO is an MM 67. Should I have let the water go lower than what I can see in the sight glass, or do I have a malfunctioning LWCO? I've done some reading and understand that the float may be stuck. If that's the case, how exactly do I attempt to unjam the float? Explicit directions are appreciated. I'm trying to avoid calling out our HVAC guy if it's something that I can do.

Thanks!
Jamie

  • LWCO not shutting off boiler

It needs taken apart and cleaned in all likelyhood. This is not typically a job for the inexperienced. I would suggest you hire a professional and while you are at it have them do a seasonal check on your boiler including a combustion test and carbon monoxide test.I am sure the pro will instruct you on frequently blowing down your low water cut off to keep it clean and also to check and make sure it is still shutting off the boiler in the event of low water.

    low water cutoff.

First off, yes this is not a job for the inexperienced. With that said, it may be a stuck float, build up in the float chamber possibly. Or a more likely thing is fused contacts on switch portion of lwco or the cam rocker has broken down. Just found one of those last week and the fused switch the week before. Hopefully this will get you started.

    67 L.W.C.O.

Don't play games with L.W.C.O.s. Have your contractor bring a 6667 part with him. Have him cleane out float chamber and install part. What ever it costs,it's still less than a new boiler. ED
