Legionella--Attn: PAH

...saw a wholesaler's trade magazine left on the counter such that I (not those behind) could read.

Prominent article about legionella. Suggestion: Run heater at 140° with tempering device to limit supply afterwards to 120°. Also suggested that such tempering device become MANDATORY.

What I don't know is if it was there to encourage such installation or to encourage griping about another [unnecessary] requirement that adds to the cost of a hot water heater like the recent explosion-resistant changes...

I always hear Rush Limbaugh there in the mornings...

Owner is a distant relative and I'll ask him when we're both not too busy.

    So close, yet so far...

140 will be the standard minimum requirement in the near future. A mixing device will be necessary, but 120 F is the wrong temp - it's too low. Constant circulation at 133F min is required for suppression of the bugs within the distribution system. ASSE certified scald guard devices will be required at any points of use where human contact takes place.

CIPH took a step in the right direction by requiring 140 F storage temps, but fell short by allowing the reduced temp device being placed at the water heater's outlet with no protection at points of use and no requirements for constant circulation. So, the distribution system remains a suitable amplifier for bugs and bathers are not adequately protected from scalding. 120 F is not a safe delivery temperature, especially where children and elderly bathers are coming in contact - 3rd degree burns remain a reality at 120 F.

If you pay close attention to the ads in trade mags, you'll notice companies who manufacture ASSE certified scald guard devices are beginning to actively promote those products in anticipation of code changes.
