staple up question for you all

When doing a staple up job, how far down from the pipes do you put your foil or insulation? I was taught to put it down about 3 inches from the pipes but I was wondering if a guy put it all the way on the bottom of the joist and sealed off the whole joist space if that would be a good or bad idea? Does anybody seal off the whole joist with there foil?

    Insulation

    Jake,

The purpose of the air gap is to avoid striping on the floor surface. If the insulation is installed with an air gap, the gap will "fill" evenly with heat first and then radiate up evenly to the finished floor. If the insulation is pushed tight against the tubing, the haet will mostly only go straight up where the tubing is and you will get striping of hot and cold spots.

So is it best to close off the whole joist space and put your foil near the bottom of the joists or say just half of it or so?

    Air space

I used plates.. put foil stapled to the inside of the joist 1 inch up so it would not interfere with a future ceiling. The heat works perfectly.

Eleft, I noticed you have about 10,000 staples in the plates. Do you have any noise as a result of being so firmly attached?
